Thanksgiving is nearly upon us: The end-of-year holiday season has begun! Prepare for
peace and joy (we hope)–and, sadly, the headaches that holiday planning
entails. But let's kill two birds with one stone: Let's talk about hiring a corporate trivia company to entertain at your holiday party, to increase your joy while reducing your stress. Read on…
December is a busy month for any corporate
event professional, since only the grinchiest of companies fail to treat
their staffs to some type of festivities. There are copious options,
of course—bowling, karaoke, standing around drinking with
your coworkers—but a quality holiday trivia event is always an ideal
choice: A professional quiz show has the benefit of being…

Fun (who doesn't like games?)

Collaborative (working on that always-valuable team-building mojo)

Cost-effective (a typical event is run by a very small team)

And—best of all—it's customized.
Want questions and games about your specific office or industry? A
credible company can accommodate (we here at the Big Quiz Thing have
customized events for everyone from a university ichthyology department
to a massive financial-services organization). Even if you just want a
grab bag of pop-culture fun, it will generally be geared toward your co.'s
demographics and culture. (In other words, if you have a millennial-heavy staff, there won't be many queries about flappers and the
Charleston.)

Each event is unique, and there's no better time to feel special than the holidays. A
quiz show is also especially suited to the end of the year, since it's a
great way to have an entertaining look back on the year that was. Take
stock of your company's 2016 with lighthearted examination of the
events, people, and developments that made the year so great, or at least memorable. It's fun and educational, see?
I hadn’t seen him in 30 years, even though we almost got married.” “That’s amazing,” Bill said. “Imagine how different things would be if you had married him.” “Yeah,” Hillary said…
We're never sure who decides these things, but yes, today is "officially" National Coffee Day. Close to half of our clients request this, especially at noncorporate, wedding/anniversary/birthday/bar mitzvah events, where we’ve done entire quizzes about the life and times of a guest of honor. Perhaps you’re not interested in custom material—like most of our clients, you just want general knowledge, pop culture, etc., and you'd rather keep company business out of party time—but consider it, and inquire about it regardless, since offering this option demonstrates a company’s personalized touch and flexibility.
Beware the company whose website doesn’t list any former clients, since their “corporate” experience probably doesn’t extend beyond the founder’s girlfriend’s birthday party. (Though we’ve done that too, and it was super fun.)

There’s nothing necessarily wrong with this—that described the Big Quiz Thing in its early days—but it can be tricky, since it often means things get personal when they should be professional (a too-personally-invested salesperson is a pushy salesperson; hallelujah for the BQT’s sales manager, Ellen Bereza). Also, ask if they’re insured: If your event is at a hotel or similar venue, knowing your trivia provider can supply a certificate of liability means you have one fewer thing to worry about.

With summer on the way, the Big Quiz Thing is entering one of its busy seasons. Traditionally, with companies throwing warm-weather parties for its staff and summer associates (in offices, at restaurants, even on boats), we pick up a lot of corporate business between June and August; thus, people tend to inquire between March and May. So it seems like a good time to offer some expert advice on what to look for when hiring a corporate trivia provider. Behold…

Hire an actual trivia company: Let’s start with the most important, and the obvious…which turns out isn’t so obvious. Since “corporate trivia events” is still an alien concept to many (it’s always interesting when I explain to new acquaintances what I do for a living), even people who are looking to hire in this field often don’t know that there are companies who do only trivia. Thus they might end up recruiting some other event company that just happens to include trivia in its multifarious bag of tricks— teambuilding generalists, scavenger hunt companies, comedy troupes, etc. These events might be a good time (trivia usually is, if you ask me), but you simply won’t get the experience that a true quiz-focused company can give you, both in terms of fun and professionalism. Every other tip I offer below could theoretically be subsumed under this one: Demand the experts.

See them in action: Another general one. Most corporate quiz companies also produce public events, whether cozy pub quizzes or, like the BQT, large-scale live game shows.
Ask about their public offerings, and try to see one live (or send a
colleague)—this will answer a lot of the questions I suggest asking below, plus you’ll probably have a fun night out on the
company dime. And ask what the major differences are between their
public and private shows. The biggest for the BQT: Our public quizzes
are generally more challenging than custom ones—it’s more self-selecting
crowd when it’s open to the masses, after all. (Check our calendar to see when the BQT is in your area, e-mail us to get on the guest list, and say hi to our awesomely dedicated geek fans.)

Ask to see sample questions: If you can't experience the questions at a public show, request to see some; any trivia provider worth its question marks will be willing to show you samples. It’ll give you an idea if the company really knows what makes for a quality quiz event—do they produce clever, engaging, original questions and puzzles (at the Big Quiz Thing, we often say they’re “figureoutable”), or do they think an obscure, dry query is good enough (“What’s the capital of Burundi?” is my favorite bad example. The correct answer is “Who cares?”)? Even worse, they might simply “borrow”
questions from someplace else (e.g., a Trivial Pursuit deck); I have seen it done, believe it
or not, so ask from whence these queries come. The
amount of energy a company puts into designing and creating its content
is indicative of how much energy it’ll put into making your event a
success.
Demand multimedia content: With most trivia companies, an event consists of a guy with a microphone asking verbal questions. Sure, that can be fun—especially if the questions are decent—but that isn’t a show, and c’mon, wouldn’t your crowd rather play a real quiz show? Quality trivia providers (the Big Quiz Thing among them) incorporate visual puzzles and audio clues for a fully engaging game-show experience (and they’re experienced at working with a venue to make sure things go smoothly from a tech perspective). And yes, demand originality: See the BQT’s YouTube page for some examples of our multimedia games, which are a cut above plain old “Who is this a picture of?” visual questions.

Make sure you’re getting a professional quizmaster: No one individual is more integral to the success of a quiz event than the host, so ask about him (or her, of course). Confirm that they have experience in hosting not just corporate events, but corporate quiz events—engaging the players, steering the format, presenting the material properly. Some trivia providers employ stand-up comedians or TV newscasters as their hosts; those people might be fun, but they’re not professional quizmasters. (Think of it this way: I’m a professional quizmaster, but I would strongly advise you against paying me to give an interpretive dance performance.) Dovetailing with the point about multimedia, look for a company that provides an actual performance, not a dry exercise. After all, if that’s a boring guy reading questions is enough, why not give a microphone to the funny guy in accounting, google “great trivia questions,” and do it yourself? (Pro tip: Don’t do that.) With our own TV quiz show under our belt, the Big Quiz Thing is the best there is at bringing true game show excitement to live groups of all sizes. Yesterday was 4/14/14. Today is 4/15/14. Tomorrow is 4/16/14. And so on till Saturday: Every day's date is a palindrome—the same forward and backward. Monumental, right? Truly a whole-bunch-of-times-in-a-lifetime event.

To honor this most honor-worthy of happenings, behold a low-ago video puzzle I dug from the archives: "Trivial Palindromes Semordnilap Laivirt." Each statement can be rephrased as a palindromic phrase. For example: "The largest city in Poland had yet to be cooked" can be restated as "Warsaw was raw." Wow. Have at it, Bob.
(Part 1)

Wow, wasn't last night's final-season premiere of Mad Men fantastic? The way that Don Draper & Co. navigated the highs and lows of the ad business amid the cultural tumult of the 1960s? Incredible.

But surely the highlight (surely) was our little preshow trivia challenge on Twitter. For an hour (an hour-plus, actually, since we kept tweeting during commercials), we sent out the finest in Mad Men–themed quiz questions for the social-media masses. Thanks to everyone who played, but especially our top scorers: @ThePaqRat, @Negro_Abe, @negropeggy, @iblameshane, @greenmelinda, and @riptor.

For those of you who didn't play (or aren't even following the BQT on Twitter, for shame), see the questions below—the first 12, I'll send up the rest later in the week. And since we didn't quite get to every query last night, we'll be tweeting out a few more next week during Episode 2's premiere. You don't want most of it, you want all of it. Am I right?

Some fun coming this Sunday: That outrageously entertaining, era-defining chronicle of America in transition, Mad Men, is back on AMC for its final season (10pm EST). And to capitalize on the mania, we'll be presenting an BQT online trivia challenge: A whole bunch of questions all about the show's preceding six seasons, in the inimitable BQT style (which means yes, some multimedia fun). Starting at 9pm (one hour before the premiere), we'll be posting one question at a time on our Twitter feed (@BigQuizThing), and hey, maybe we'll give away a prize or two. Fun, fun, fun. And a day or two later, we'll post all the questions on this blog for your tweet-free edification. So follow us on Twitter, review the preceding seasons on Netflix, and try to avoid getting run over by a lawnmower, Guy.
In fact, a huge aspect of it is answering questions—as with anyone who provides a professional service, clients who hire us for their own trivia nights always have queries for us: They want to know what we can offer and how we can offer it in the realm of corporate trivia.

The answer? Awesomeness.

Some questions are easy to answer (yep, we provide the pens). Others are more challenging (I think I’ll keep those examples to myself). One that falls somewhere in the middle, but is certainly one of the most often asked questions, is about prizes. As we explain to all clients, we don’t include prizes in our cost, but we’re always happy to advise on them, and even help acquire them. Some suggestions for great trivia prizes…

—Gift cards. Easy to acquire, desirable, lots of variety, relatively inexpensive. Plus, I can be real smooth about pulling them out of my quizmaster jacket pocket.

—Novelty trophies/medals. Available at any party-goods store, and they add to the whole game-show milieu. Depending on the design, we can even simply customize them with a company-logo sticker (or, why not, a Big Quiz Thing sticker).

This.

—A corporate perk. This is a fun one: Several companies we’ve worked with have given members of the winning team a company prize. We’ve awarded extra telecommuting days, an in-office ice cream bash, even—for one group of summer interns—a group lunch date with the CEO. Yes, you college go-getters, your ultimate business success depends on how well you answer trivia questions about M&M’s.

—Puzzle books and pocket games. Twenty minutes and 50 bucks at Barnes & Noble can get you a huge bag of mini board games, portable games, puzzle books, etc., that can be super fun for a winning team to split up and take home.

—Something big. Want to go deluxe? We’ve given away $10k online gift certificates, brand-new iPods, a basket of Google Chromecast media players (those are actually pretty cheap, but they look impressive). No better way to really get the competitive juices flowing.

Of course, none of this is strictly necessary. One prize that comes with every BQT event at no extra charge is the honor and glory of knowing you possess more useless knowledge than your colleagues. When it comes to trivia parties, we guarantee fun—and competition—regardless of the goodies at stake. Another reason that when it comes to corporate trivia parties, you never lose with the Big Quiz Thing.
A quiz show is the perfect entertainment for an educational fundraiser since, let’s face it, a trivia game is itself educational. Sure, playing the BQT event isn’t going to earn you a Ph.D. (unless you're getting your degree in how to write the perfect trivia question), but I'd argue that the typical BQT attendee leaves a little smarter than when they arrived (smarter being a relative term). Naturally, we’ve picked up a few useful tricks for how to adapt our format for more enlightening purposes than mere trivial diversion.

Last year, the BQT partnered with a fantastic organization, Breakthrough New York. BTNY, in its own words, is “a non-profit organization that transforms the lives of motivated, low-income students by preparing them for college so that they can succeed in the world,” running topflight after-school educational programs. As part of its annual big-ticket gala (at the absolutely splendid Capitale in Chinatown), they asked us to help them design and stage an “Are You Smarter than a Breakthrough Student?”–themed event—a quiz in which the adult attendees tested their knowledge of the BTNY curriculum. Great idea for an educational fundraiser, right?

For most custom events, I don’t write a top-to-bottom new set of questions; we do offer a bespoke-trivia option, but it’s rare that a company asks for an entirely new collection of material. This, however, was such a rare instance, and perhaps the most fun we had doing one: The BTNY staff sent me reams of its curriculum—science, grammar, literature, and more—for a variety ages, and I pored through it, crafting questions that reflected both the organization’s ethos and the BQT style of creative trivia. (In other words, fun and "figureoutable" trivia questions, not just asking players to parrot back facts they learned lo those many years ago.) Take, for example, the one in that photo above: not too tough, though still not a complete gimme.

Meanwhile, on the grammar tip, I pulled the above image from a BTNY teacher’s lesson Powerpoint, and asked, "What do DC and IC stand for here?" (While quizmastering this one, I managed to squeeze a joke out of the fact that Hawkman gets the dynamic-spellcheck underline.)

But with all corporate and private events, it’s important to keep the focus on the client (we’re the hired help, after all). With trivia fundraisers, that’s even more important: The guests need to remember what cause they’re supporting (and why). And in Breakthrough New York’s case, we wanted to spotlight their young scholars: the kids whose lives they transform, as it were. So EdP and I broke out a gimmick that we’d used very successfully at a previous educational fundraiser (for the equally worthy Building Educated Leaders for Life): We visited a Breakthrough school one afternoon, and recruited a few of the more outgoing kids to ask a few questions on camera, and screened it for the guests at the gala, effectively letting each kid serve as quizmaster for a question. It was an effective touch, and for EdP and me, a fun one (the more we work with kids in any capacity, the more we enjoy it; take our recent success with the Big Family Quiz Thing public event).
The show was a terrific hit (here's an interview with the adult winner), so Breakthrough has recruited us for its 2014 gala. It’ll be happening Tuesday, April 29, this time at Tribeca Rooftop (EdP is making a site visit this week to know what to expect techwise; something we do for any event, big or small). If you’re the charitable-gala type, consider it unmissable—a great cause, excellent food and drink, and, of course, primo entertainment. And I’m just now starting to once again dive into the BTNY curriculum, coming up with this year’s batch of multimedia trivia, designating questions for youngsters to once again ask on camera, and fondly remembering my own long-ago education (what exactly are the differences between equilateral, isosceles, and scalene triangles?), adapting it for my adult avocation.

Well, how about this: I am the subject of a rather in-depth profile at the fascinating journalism website Narratively. Written by the severely talented Helaina Hovitz and photographed by Courtney Dudley (she was at our humdinger of an Oscars quiz), this article represents a unique experience for me: I get to see my mind and story laid bare as if I were an actual, real, honest-to-God celebrity (it does focus on the incipient BQT TV show, so hey, that's not completely off-base).

I can't say that I'm 100 percent happy with everything here—I hope Zach Braff never reads it, for example—but that's the media for you. And hey, I'm nit-picking: It's fair, and paints a reasonably impressive portrait of who I am and what I've accomplished. (My mom hates it, but I think she may be slightly biased.)

Deep breath…

This week, we completed shooting of the Big Quiz Thing: The TV Show, and man, was it an adventure. Seven episodes of a New York City–themed game show, effectively (in my opinion) adapting the BQT format for the small screen. It airs starting this summer (exact date TBA) on the NYC Life network (channel 25 of Time Warner Cable or Fios). Of course, we'll be plastering clips all over the Internet, fear not.

Some photos from the shooting are below. All pictures by me, except where noted; you won't get the full experience, partly because I was so busy with everything else, but I think it gives a good taste of how awesome this was…
Rehearsal,

which just completely kicked ass, and were super fun guys to boot. Two

Sure, the guy had a great week, accurately predicting that a likeably cool-headed American success story would be elected over a desperate plutocratic buffoon. But still, odd coincidence. (Clearly Silver isn't yet old news. Neither is the Willardtron 3000, judging by the frequency with which we all used Mitt Romney as a piñata last night.) My noticing of this led me to ask the audience something I've been wondering: What if we did a special BQT event with Sir Silver, nothing but politics and baseball? Interested? I definitely am (I hate baseball), and the crowd tonight definitely seemed to think so. Stay tuned.
The newish Smart-Ass Points stickers. Arrival in L.A. and Chicago TBD.

For the uninitiated, Smart-Ass Points are credit for wrong but funny answers, one of the many things that makes the Big Quiz Thing so double-plus awesome. And last evening, we had lots of excellent Smart-Ass Points. But here's the problem: We're in NYC tonight, with much of the same fabulous BQT content (yeah, you heard me), so I'm loath to share with you some of yesterday's better SAPs, for fear of giving away. So I will tread carefully (then again, I do like rewarding people for reading this blog)…

—The book that included a murderer's analysis of the music of Genesis, Whitney Houston, and Huey Lewis and the News (really? I can't make fun of Huey, booing fans?) was Mein Kampf.

—The old smoking dude from the '50s clog-dancing in Appalachia was crumping.

— Whose did Mike Tyson bite off in '97? Vincent Van Gogh.

Et cetera. The audio round, "Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions," was particular fertile Smart-Ass territory, as anytime a team didn't know the answer, they were tempted to use the Snappy Answer clue to come up with something clever. The best of the bunch won't make sense here without question-killing context, so allow me to be mysterious: "Are You Proficient in Word?" got the biggest laugh of the night.

As predicted, the video puzzle, "Movies and TV: Untranslated," was tricky…somewhat. IDing the movies and TV shows was fairly simple, but puzzling out the foreign languages was rather brutal. Tip for folks in NYC (and L.A., and Chicago): Bring a linguistics major to join your team, you won't regret it (and they won't, of course).
A quick thank-you to our serious prize sponsor lineup for the evening: Our old friends at the Modern Homebrew Emporium and the Harvard Museum of Natural History, plus newcomers the Grafton Street Pub and the MIT Museum. Beats remainder DVDs any day of the week, doesn't it? And also a thank-you to my returning warm-up comedian/sidekick, Mr. Wes Hazard. The man, the legend.

And the finale: Quick and easy, returning champs the Monstrous Humanoids mopped it up over perennial contenders Loose Lips Sink Quips and Nate Silver = Is Relevant (it's an anagram! neeeeerds!). Two questions, and Humanoidette Esther claimed the top prize, the first time in their long BQT history that the Humanoids had a repeat victory. Done, and done well.
Really? No, seriously? Yes—we’re doing it again. After last June’s earth-shaking Ten Hour Quiz Show Marathon in NYC, to celebrate a decade of BQT action, we are just insane enough to be doing it again. Our ever-supreme Boston-area home, Harvard Square’s Oberon, is hosting the second performance of our Tenth Anniversary Marathon (this one closer to the actual ten-year mark), with another full day of scintillating live game show action, and another ten hours of Quizmaster Noah (that’s me) doing the nonstop-quizmastering thing at the expense of his health and sanity (now accepting 5-hour Energy donations). It's Sunday, December 2, noon–10pm, a little more than a month till I tempt fate once again.

First, the basics: It’s ten hours of the familiar BQT team-quiz formula, 25 rounds total of the game. The greatest hits from the BQT's decade of video and audio puzzles, naturally, plus the world’s greatest trivia questions, a passel of Lightning Rounds, a handful of Text Message Challenges, Smart-Ass Points galore. And no, you don't have to stay all day: For one low ticket price, guests can come and go as they please—as long as someone from your team submits an answer sheet for a given round, your team will receive points for that round. (Last May’s blog post about BQT Marathon strategy ought to come in handy.) Backing us up all the way will be the return of our erstwhile Boston music-meister, DJ Xdon RicklesX.

Plus, more fun, courtesy one of the show’s many premier sponsors: Improv Boston. New England's premier home for comedy will be making the scene throughout the day, presenting their top improv, sketch and stand-up acts for your multivalent entertainment. (Including an appearance from new Boston BQT sidekick, stand-up Wes Hazard.) The folks at Improv Boston are experts at "showcasing today’s best performers and training tomorrow’s stars," and we're thrilled to have them on board.

And now, your most eager question: prizes. The winning team takes home more than double the haul of a typical BQT: a cool $500. Plus we’ll have tons more goodies from a rafter of Boston’s greatest stores and experiences: So far, we've got regular Boston prize sponsors The Harvard Museum of Natural History, the Modern Homebrew Emporium, and Follow the Honey, plus Harvard Square's lovably old-school Million Year Picnic comic-book store, Kendall Square's inspirationally wired Voltage Coffee and Art, the film nerd paradise of the Coolidge Corner Theatre, the wacky-gift wonderland that is Joie de Vivre, and more. Even Improv Boston will be tossing in prizes, and there are plenty more on the way.

It’s Sunday, December 2, noon to 10pm, and the ridiculously cheap advance tickets are already on sale right here. BTW, missing from this is that guy you always see in Times Square dressed in a Statue of Liberty costume and posing for photos. I actually asked him the Statue of Liberty question, gave him clues galore, and he still missed it. The irony was fun, but it turned out more sad than anything else—I don't think the dude's grasp of English was all it could be. Happy Canada Day! This day has somewhat special significance for your beloved quizmaster, since I am —technically—Canadian. My father was born in the bustling metropolis of Windsor, Ontario, best known as the city where 19- and 20-year-old Detroit kids go on Friday nights in order to drink legally. When I was 15 years old, he was transferred to the considerably more bustling metropolis of Montreal, Quebec, where I spent the last three of my high school years (and by virtue of my dad's heritage, acquired a Canadian passport, which is pathetically out of date at the moment). Montreal was awesome, but by the time I was 20, back in the States for good, this adventure had retreated into the nostalgic recesses of my mind, and I was boring old American again. But I will always bristle when my countrymen express their characteristic ignorance of their northern neighbor (as when, yes, right-wing idiots declared they were moving to Canada to escape Obamacare). And to answer your question, yes, it was damn cold, but that doesn't sound so bad considering what it's like in NYC right now (good thing global warming is a myth, huh?).

Today is Canada Day, the anniversary of Canuck independence (1869), and I'm honoring it by tweeting my favorite Canadi-factoids all day. But twice in the BQT's history—2003 and 2008—I commemorated the holiday with a special audio round: "Keep on Rockin’ in the Land of Socialized Health Insurance" (well, the first time I didn't call it that, since I wasn't as imaginative back then). Songs by Canadian artists, of which there are many, many, because Canadians are awesome (and there ain't much else to do in Winnipeg but form a band). Digging through the archives, here's what I deemed quizworthy back in the day…

2003
1. "These Eyes" -- The Guess Who
2. "Fat Lip" -- Sum 41
3. "Never Surrender" -- Corey Hart
4. "Puppy Love" -- Paul Anka
5. "All For Swinging You Around" -- The New Pornographers
6. "Suzanne" -- Leonard Cohen
7. "Sk8er Boi" -- Avril Lavigne
8. "Southern Man" -- Neil Young
9. "Informer" -- Snow
10. "Carey" -- Joni Mitchell

A nice mix there: legends and flashes in the pan, great tunes ("These Eyes" is immortal) and conscious garbage ("Puppy Love"). I remember that hardly any teams could ID the New Pornographers song, but hey, I wanted to seem current (Avril Lavigne wasn't enough for me; BTW, in those days before easy song downloading, I acquired that song by purchasing a bootleg CD on Canal Street in Chinatown). I also seriously considered upping the list to 11 tracks, since I felt the desperate need to squeeze in Toronto's pride of the '90s, Barenaked Ladies. Laugh, if you want, but I was way into that band in high school, when they had yet to break through in the States, and they were a terrifically dorky live act. Granted, everything they've done in the past 15 years sucks, but hey, how good is your band?

Circa 1992, I could really relate

Then, five years later…

2008
1. "Man! I Feel Like A Woman" -- Shania Twain
2. "Heat Of The Night" -- Bryan Adams
3. "Signs" -- Five Man Electrical Band
4. "Turn Me Loose" -- Loverboy
5. "Building a Mystery" -- Sarah McLachlan
6. "Closer To The Heart" -- Rush
7. "Money City Maniacs" -- Sloan
8. "1234" -- Feist
9. "Welcome To My Life" -- A Simple Plan
10. "If You Could Read My Mind" -- Gordon Lightfoot

Only time ever A Simple Plan opened for Gordon Lightfoot. It's strange, but I have a much less vivid memory of this round than the one from five years earlier, though clearly I was over Barenaked Ladies by then. And it looks like I was conscious of not reusing anyone from the first edition. BTW, when you're a geeky teen boy in Canada in the early '90s, it is a legal requirement that you become a Rush fan. And when you're a geeky Canadian indie-rock snob in the mid-'90s, it is mandatory you become a Sloan fan (best band ever from Halifax, Nova Scotia). Listen:

So seriously, who should've been in there? And what if I did a new edition now? (Well, a year from now.) Is Bieber too obvious? Time to finally give Bachman-Turner Overdrive some love? The Big Quiz Thinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08519581270310367461noreply@blogger.com3
