Thank you! Sincere gratitude to everyone who helped make it probably our best night yet at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia yesterday evening. Another tremendous session of quiz goodness, this despite the unmistakable noncooperation of my damned laptop remote. Live by the multimedia sword, die by the multimedia sword, as I say…though there clearly was no dying. We recovered nicely (hooray for long VGA cords), if I do say so, and not an ounce of fun was spilled.
Very glad we got to treat Philly to two of my favorite recent BQT video/audio puzzles: "The Same Name Movie Music Mash-Up" (making hay of the confluence of Raquel Welch's Fantastic Voyage and Coolio's "Fantastic Voyage") and "Okay, We'll Give You the Eltit" (song clips with the title and only the title played backward). Much fun had by all, as I was reminded that when it comes to trivia, there's a hardcore contingent in Philly that most definitely does not fuck around: Several teams kicked booty left and right (many of them associates of Philly trivia master Johnny Goodtimes), although I was happy to see that even the lower-scoring squads were screaming and shouting with joy. (How could they not? We gave last place a green leprechaun's beard.)
But that was only the tip of the prize iceberg: the $200 cash jackpot, of course, but also our fine, fine prize sponsors—the forthcoming brutally black comedy Bad Words (opens March 28), the endlessly gorgeous Independence Seaport Museum, Painting with a Twist, and World Cafe Live itself. Extreme thanks to all.
The buzzertastic finale pit several of those bigger brains against one another: We had Jesters of Tortuga (which, I later learned, was the team that won the recent Quizzo Bowl on a freakin' boat!), Crimea River (you can never lose with a trivia team name ripped from the headlines), and Your In-Flight Movie Today Is Splash! (don't ask me, I have no idea). The game was quickly tied up one all, as our Jester knew about the Velvet Revolution, and the Hanks-Hannah fan conjured memories of 3rd Rock from the Sun. But then victory came to JOT, when their rep remembered the classic cartoon character that, for some not-that-interesting reason, was briefly known as "Brutus." And thus…
1. The Jesters of Tortuga
2. Your In-Flight Movie Today Is Splash!
3. Crimea River
4. Olive Loaf Is the Fruitcake of Lunchmeats
5. Living the Dream/The Sidecardigans (tie)
7. Ukraine in the Membrane
10. Foizen Fiesta Fillies
NEXT: We're back at World Cafe Live in just a couple months, Sunday, June 8. Want to see us in Philadelphia more often? Write to us on Facebook or Twitter and let us know. Onward!
