NYC: Coming soon: THE BIG MUPPETS QUIZ THING

No, I was not kidding: In a little more than two weeks, the BQT is back at our favorite Brooklyn venue, Littlefield, for a delightfully special special event: the Big Muppets Quiz Thing! Wednesday, March 19: In advance (two days before) the big-screen release of Muppets Most Wanted, we're teaming with New York's premier repository of Muppetania (Muppetobilia?), ToughPigs.com, for the ultimate multimedia test of Henson intelligence. Joe and Ryan, the masterminds of ToughPigs (and the fine hosts of a monthly screening event at Union Hall), have been advising me (I love the Muppets, and I'm a nerd, but I'm no Muppet nerd), and we've come up with a panoply of trivial delights: All about The Muppet Show and Muppet movies, of course, plus copious quantities of Sesame Street, Jim Henson's other boundlessly creative projects, and much more. EdP and I will host, with Joe and Ryan making a guest appearance and lending their expertise to teams bit by bit (all will be explained). Plus, between rounds, they'll dig into their practically endless vault of Muppet video goodies to screen some particularly obscure delights.

As usual with the BQT, it's all for big prizes, among them passes to Astoria, Queens's Museum of the Moving Image, NYC's ultimate cultural institution of Muppet lovers.

A few years back, Moving Image hosted a mind-blowing exhibition, "Jim Henson's Fantastic World," covering his entire career, from early puppet-less experimental films to his domination of the felt-and-googly-eyes corner of American pop culture. Among the juicy obscurities, I really dug this ad for—of all things—La Choy noodles.

The exhibit closed two years ago, but fear not: It's coming back. For good: Starting in 2015, Moving Image will be the home of the Jim Henson Exhibition and Gallery, the permanent display of the world's most impressive collection of Muppetry. Meanwhile, the museum is still the site of the occasional Henson-themed screening and event (including, ahem, a quiz last month). Learn more about everything the Museum of the Moving Image has to offer—way more than just Muppets—at MovingImage.us.

Plus: We got a whole passel of swag from various Muppet-related sources, thanks to the ToughPigs crew. This is going to be a hot, hot show; miss it at your peril. Wednesday, March 19, 7:30pm at Littlefield (DeGraw Street in Gowanus). Tickets going fast, but you can snatch them up at LittlefieldNYC.com. Hope you'll be there, along with the lovers, the dreamers, and me.
