After two sold-out appearances at the New York–area location of the country’s best movie theater—The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema—the Big Quiz Thing is going to where it all began: The week of Monday, April 7, your loyal quizmaster will be in the action-packed city of Austin, Texas, for a couple evenings of Multimedia Movie Trivia at two of the original Alamo locations.
On Monday, April 7, I'll be at the Lakeline location, and then Wednesday, April 9, it all goes down at the Slaughter Lane Alamo. If you're an Austinite, I surely don't need to tell you about the glory of Alamo—the grade-A screenings, the unique events, the primo menu served directly at your seat, the gloriously ass-kicking anti-phone-use policy—but perhaps you're curious about just what kind of trivia is Big Quiz Thing Multimedia Movie Trivia. This isn't a pub quiz—we're bringing the BQT buzzer system, as we solicit four audience volunteers at a time for a one-on-one-on-one showdown on all things movie and trivial, based on questions, clips, mash-ups, you name it, all projected on the massive screen. And all of the film-themed gimmick games that have helped make the BQT the as-seen-on-TV standard in live trivia entertainment will be there, including…
Sayings of the Silver Screen: A movie clip is shown, paused right before a famous quote. Can you name the quote?
The Bipolar Movie Challenge: Video from a movie scene is accompanied by the audio from a completely different scene, from a different movie. Identify both films.
The Movie Quote Thesaurus: Puzzle out the famous movie quote, rephrased in an entertainingly convoluted manner.
The Same Name Movie-Music Challenge: Video from a movie, accompanied by a completely unrelated pop song…except they happen to share the same title. What’s the common title?
The Movie Title Mindbender: Identify the movie based on its title screen, with the actual name obscured.
Rebus-O-Rama: Who’s the movie star in question, whose name is indicated by the picture puzzle?
…and tons more—including simply the best cinematic trivia questions anywhere. All for honor, glory, and—of course—prizes, courtesy the Drafthouse itself. (Free passes, drinks, discounts, ad infinitum.)
Monday, April 7, at 9:30pm at Lakeline; Wednesday, April 9, at 10:15pm at Slaughter Lane. Click those links now for tickets, and prepare for a tremendous evening of cinematic, nerdtastic excitement.
