It's nearly February, the nominations are in, and you can feel it in the air: Oscars fever. (The best type of fever, don't you think?) And after a fantastic packed show last year at 92YTribeca, we're presenting an encore of one of our most popular special events, the imitated but never duplicated Big Oscars Quiz Thing.
This year, the Oscars (a.k.a. the Gay Super Bowl) happens Sunday, March 2, hosted by Billy Crystal (actually, I don't know, but that's not a bad guess). And like every year, there is no more trivial-themed event that dominates the public consciousness: who will win what, who should win what, who has won what, who do we wish won't win what, etc. Thus, perfect fodder for a special edition of New York City's only live trivia spectacular.
With 92YTribeca gone from this cruel world, we're bringing the show to one of our longtime favorite venues, Le Poisson Rouge. LPR, you may be aware, boasts a couple of massive video screens, which is crucial, because like last year, the BOQT isn't just a world-class quiz, it's also a fantastic screening. Check it: Starting at 6pm, we'll be doing an abbreviated team quiz on all things Academy Awards: present nominees, past winners, past losers, ad infinitum. (One of my favorites: Which 1970s winner was the last Best Picture whose title was a complete sentence?) Then, at 7pm, it's red-carpet time: The big screens will display the preshow, followed by the ceremony itself in all its splendor, which you get to enjoy in the company of several hundred of your fellow snark-loving New Yorkers. Plus: more trivia! During commercial breaks, I'll wander the crowd, microphone in hand, cocktail-hour style, challenging audience members to the one-off movie question here and there, for even more fabulous prizes.
Ah, yes, prizes! We're still working on rallying our fantastic prize partners, to assemble another edition NYC's greatest trivia prize haul, but we're off to an excellent start: On Location Tours, one of our stalwart sponsors, has stepped up big time, kicking in a whopping 14 passes to their A-grade entertainment-themed tours of NYC! Not just movies, but TV as well: Everything from the Central Park TV & Movie Sites jaunt, to the Sex and the City Hotspots sojourn. There's no better way to walk in the footsteps of your favorite screen characters and stars than with OLT; learn more at OnLocationTours.com.
Tickets for the Big Oscars Quiz Thing are on sale now; one price for the preshow quiz plus the full screening—hours of fun and prizes in a deluxe venue with excellent food and drink. Grab tickets (and RSVP on Facebook); this show was a mob scene last year, so act fast. Trust us, it'll be an honor just to be nominated.
