Because someone demanded it: Friday, March 8, it is once again your chance to be a star—Movieoke is coming back. Another dosage of that curious hybrid of film-geekdom and karaoke unself-consciousness—which I hosted for a time at our sometime-home of 92YTribeca (not coincidentally the location of last weekend's NYC edition of the Big Oscars Quiz Thing)—presented by me, Quizmaster Noah, now at the deliciously hip Williamsburg venue of Videology.
What is this Movieoke of which I speak, you ask? Simple, and seriously fun: When it's your turn, we put on a scene of your choice (from any DVD in Videology's extensive rental collection, or bring one with you), we turn down the sound, and we slap on the subtitles. You take the stage and act out the scene, alone or with a friend, to the delight of the incipient Hollywood star whose undeniable passion beats strong within you. In between performances, I'll be casually quizzing folks with some greatest hits from the BQT's movie-trivia vault (for prizes and free drinks, courtesy Videology).
It's an awesome venue—cozy and classy, a hybrid bar/screening room/DVD rental store, curating an excellent regular schedule of showings and offbeat events. And while the 92Y events were fun squared, there are a couple nice advantages to doing it at Videology: (a) a much, much larger selection of DVDs to choose from; (b) the action starts at 8pm, not 10:30pm; and (c) admission is free! Absolutely free! As long as you're not a dick and refuse to order a couple drinks! If all goes swimmingly, this just may become a regular or semiregular event.
Videology is located at 308 Bedford Avenue, at South 1st Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, a pleasant walk from the L train on a balmy evening. You're in, right? I mean, you're a star, aren't you?
