Quiz recap: 5773 begins

 

Yet another successful night at Oberon in Cambridge, Mass, my quiz friends. This time on a Tuesday, as I'm just Jewy enough to not quizmaster during the celebration of the Jewish New Year. Yes, it's true, as you learned in Round 1, we just entered 5773. Jews live in the future.

As you may know, since being bereft of my Boston sidekick, B-Cutie Katie (her debut as Chicago BQT quizmistress is just a couple weeks away!) I have been searching for a new sidekick, and tonight we tried something new: the hybrid sidekick–opening act. The fabulously funny Jessie Baade warmed you up nicely, I thought.

Next month: another comic, a male one. Beware the waves of testosterone emanating from the Oberon stage that night.

Now then, I got a lot of good feedback last night re: our video puzzle, "The Rock Bands of Dr. Moreau," even more than when we premiered this game in NYC. One fan even asked for a keepsake copy of this image. As you wish, Jenny…

Smart-Ass Point standouts: The reality show about Muslims in the U.S. was called Keeping Up with the Arabashians. In the '80s, Burger King ads featured Herb, supposedly the only person in the U.S. who had never slept with Madonna. And the newsworthy punk rock band whose name the Today show refused to mention on TV: Cocksucking Asspounders. Oh, the erudition of Harvard Square!

The finale was…interesting. The winningest team in BQT Boston history, Quippi Longstocking as they were known last night, didn't even make it into the top three. Instead, it was their nemeses Russell Train Kicks Ass!, two-time champs Judy Blumin' Onion (who had won in the past as Mnemonica Lewinsky and Habeas Porpoise) and the Susan Lucci of the BQT, the Helvetica Scenario. But it was two-and-done, as JBO took victory by identifying that Honduras and El Salvador fought a war—an actual war!—sparked by a soccer rivalry.

The standings:

Also, weird: We had a team called Drinks Are on the House, and one named Free Drinks All Night. And neither was the staff team (who, BTW, swore to me last night they would win. Ah, they're coming back no matter what).
