On the plus side: Tonight's BQT at M1-5 Lounge was another outstanding night of live quiz excitement. On the minus side: Not really any Smart-Ass Points. I don't think it's that you people aren't funny—really, how could that be possible?—it's just that you people are so frickin' smart. I mean really: Tenth place was only 13 points out of first place. Clearly, you people represent the next stage of evolution.
It was anyone's game tonight: Two-peat winners the Fantastic Fournicators (thrice if you count their massive victory over 49 other teams at the New York Comic Con BQT last Saturday) were absent. And a nice element tonight was how a lot of (relatively) low-scoring teams that did well on the harder material. The video puzzle, for example, "Geography A to Z," only three teams aced it top to bottomm including Werewolf Bar Mitzvah (eventual seventh place) and Jews Against Jesus (eventual eighth). A super-tough question in Round 3—"Where in the human body will you find the fundus, the cardia and the pylorus? "—was answered correctly by only two squads including the last-place Beer Buffalo (one member is a nurse, turns out). There was a similar dynamic in the audio round, "First 5, Last 5," so I was hoping for a big upset.
But no dice: The Three-Way Finale had our old nerdified friends, Cash Cab for Cutie, Strippers for Stephen Hawking and Occupy Incontinental Congress. (The supergroup amalgam of Jefferson Davis's Sugah Titz missed by a mere half point.) And Stu of Cash Cab took it with two questions: He knew which two teams played in the first Super Bowl, and which TV theme was the most recorded song of 1966. Done, and done.
1. Cash Cab for Cutie
2. Strippers for Stephen Hawking
3. Occupy Incontinental Congress
4. Jefferson Davis's Suga Titz
5. Oh Noah You Didn't
6. Gerard Depardouche
7. Werewolf Bar Mitzvah
8. Jews Against Jesus/Hulk Hogan's Heroes (tie)
10. Romping Trollops
Also, thanks to the great Kevin Maher for supplying the short film we showed between rounds. NSFW, but seriously, watch it:
