A rollicking good live quiz spectacular at tonight's Big Quiz Thing, as EDP, Bex and I debuted at Hill Country BBQ, quite possibly New York's best BBQ restaurant. (Or so say many, many of you; I never eat while I'm working.) Not to mention a pretty sweet showroom, with a lot of C&W charm. It's interesting: I often say that the BQT does best in big, classy rooms that make the event look like a world-class game-show production (e.g., Le Poisson Rouge, Oberon), but I need to add an asterisk for classy rooms like this that give it the super-cool hipster vibe that all the kids are clamoring for.
So yeah, great show. Something you may not have noticed: Every Smart-Ass Point attempt scored, even the delightfully random ones (the greatest technological innovation of the past 25 years: "the Rabbit Vibrator/James Dean"). Clearly, the meat sweats got you all in a laughy mood, and you know I love that from a crowd.
The video round, "BB + Q," was fun, but I especially was proud of our audio round, "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah/No, No, No." (Sorry, Greg of Strippers for Stephen Hawking; I didn't think of this one.) Only 1:14 in length for all ten clips, and it got me thinking: Should I do more of this ultra-quick audio rounds with shorter clips? Discuss it on Facebook, why don't you.
Also, since we were all fighting the urge to sing it en masse when I asked about, let's do it now:
The Three-Way Fonale welcomed some of our old friends, Matt of Incontinental Congress (playing as Houston–George Bush Incontinental Airport), birthday boy Stu of Cash Cab for Cutie, and Robert of Strippers for Stephen Hawking. And though it looked briefly like it might take a while for a winner to be declared, soon enough, Matt claimed victory, leaving both of his competitors in the hot-sauce-covered dust: He could ID both the hat named for a city in Morocco, and the sitcom-within-a-sitcom on Seinfeld.
The standings (27 teams total)
1. Houston–George Bush Incontinental Airport: Appropriate, since team member Stephen is the one who suggested Hill Country in the first place.
2. Cash Cab for Cutie/Strippers for Stephen Hawking (tie)
4. The Fantastic Fournicators
5. Gerard Depardouche
6. Not the Vikings
7. Jefferson Davis Starship
8. Fat Kids Fall in Love (and Break It)/Sugah Titz (tie)
10. Double Jeopardy
NEXT: We're in Boston in two weeks, then NYC in four weeks: August 15 at Le Poisson Rouge (note time of 7pm). Then three weeks after that, it's the long-awaited BQT Ladies' Night (most likely), on the special night of Tuesday, September 6. Details to come; check the calendar…
