Recap: Challenge of the trivia geeks

Yes, this was a challenging Big Quiz Thing tonight at Drom, not by express design, but sometimes, that's how the trivial stars align. You all acquitted yourselves well nonetheless, and besides, if you can't stand the Philip K. Dick–adaptations heat, stay out of the repeated-'90s-song-lyrics kitchen. (To cite the evening's two four-part question.) I've never been prouder of you, my polymathic friends.

Some inside info: The video puzzle, "The Movie Title Mind-Bender," was made possible by an extremely entertaining website I stumbled across, The Movie Title Stills Collection. Amazing. I have no idea how this guy (I think I can confidently assume he's a he) justified the time it must have taken to amass this. I will never understand the Internet.

Tonight was a great night for learning things. He's the knowledge you gained:

—There are 115,200 ways to spell Muammar Qaddafi (I'm not even looking it up) in English.
—The Yankees claim 25% of the Major League Baseball merchandise market. No. 2 is the Red Sox, with only 8%.
—"Brown" is the currently most clichéd last name in American government: a U.S. senator of each party, and a governor. (And one of them follows the BQT on Twitter!)
—Charlie Sheen is really "Carlos Irwin."
—Steffi Graff and Andre Agassi will soon be the only living married couple in the International Tennis Hall of Fame. (Not counting this swell Smart-Ass Point answer: Billie Jean King and Don King.)
—"New York Groove" (heard in the "Streets of NYC" audio round) was by Ace Frehley of Kiss (at least the best-known version), not the Who, and not Bachman-Turner Overdrive.
—I'm totally going to Burning Man this year. Seriously, you can't stop me.
And the finale: The topic tonight was the amazing, the spectacular, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, which pretty much guaranteed we'd have a surfeit of geekiness onstage when the time came, and so it was: Steve of the Fantastic Fournicators, John of Strippers for Jon Cryer, and Dean of Cash Cab for Cutie. I mixed it up, making sure it didn't exclusively cover funny books (no one knew the number of Turn Off the Dark's initial budget—$65 million—though the audience shouted it in near unison when prompted), but Stripper John very confidently buzzed in and was able to name three of the original six members of the Sinister Six. Fournicator Steve counter-thrusted with the second half of the rhyming cartoon couplet that begins "Wealth and fame, he's ignored…" But John claimed sweet victory, ID-ing the specific Queens neighborhood where Peter Parker grew up. And thus, the Strippers' first victory in many months.
